Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT)

Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT) is a neuropsychological test used to assess capacity and rate of information processing and sustained and divided attention. It is also developed to assess the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on cognitive functioning and other neurological disorders, a challenging task that involves working memory, attention and arithmetic capabilities.

The task for the testing subject is to add each number to the previous one (span 2), or the previous second (span 3) or the previous third (span 4). For example, given the numbers 1, 7, 5, 4, the tested adds the first two numbers (1 + 7) and answers 8; then he should add the second two numbers (7 + 5) and answer 12; then the third two ones (5 + 4) and gets 9, and so on. This test assesses attention and vigilance because the testing subject is required not only to pay attention to the relevant stimuli (numbers) but also to changes in the ongoing presentation. The PASAT is an extremely sensitive measure of vigilance; however, it involves working on short‐term memory too, because the patient must "hold" in short‐term memory the preceding number while formulating an answer. You can choose the language in which you can listen to the numbers (English, French, Deutsch, Italian, Spanish, Arabic), time (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 seconds), span (2, 3, 4 or 5) and the numbers the tested has to listen to (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60).
