Wayang kulit is a traditional Indonesian art which mainly developed in Java. Wayang comes from the word 'Ma Hyang' which means to a spiritual spirit, god, or God Almighty. There are also those who interpret wayang as a Javanese term which means 'shadow', this is because the audience can also watch the puppet from behind the screen or just its shadow. Wayang kulit is played by a puppeteer who is also the narrator of the dialogue of the puppet characters, accompanied by gamelan music played by a group of nayaga and songs sung by the singer.

Ki Manteb Soedharsono is a famous shadow puppeteer from Central Java. Because of his skill in playing puppets, he is also dubbed by his fans as the Demon Puppet. He is also considered a pioneer in fusing the art of puppetry with modern musical instruments. To improve his skills, Manteb learned a lot from senior puppeteers, for example to the legendary puppeteer Ki Narto Sabdo in 1972, and to Ki Sudarman Gondodarsono, who was an expert in alphabet, in 1974. Ki Manteb's expertise in alphabet processing was not just a fighting scene, but also includes scenes of dancing, sad, happy, surprised, sleepy, and so on. In addition, he also created flashback scenes that were previously only known in the world of cinema and literary works.

The Javanese are the largest ethnic group in Indonesia originating from Central Java, East Java, Yogyakarta Special Region, Indramayu Regency (West Java), and Serang-Cilegon Regency / City (Banten). In 2010, at least 40.22% of Indonesia's population was ethnic Javanese.
