The origin of the color base of the flag of Ethiopia is shrouded in mystery. One possible interpretation says that the colors green, yellow and red are referring to the colors of the rainbow, which is not unusual phenomenon in Ethiopia at all - it can be found at the waterfalls on the Blue Nile almost permanently. The apparent resemblance to the flag of Bolivia is most likely just a coincidence. Since Ethiopia is the oldest sovereign state in Africa, the tricolor was later adopted by a number of newly emerging countries with reference to this fact.
