Hay refers to forage material primarily grass that has been harvested at the early flowering stage when there is a balance between dry matter content and concentration of essential nutrients, sufficiently dried and conserved for use as ruminant livestock feed. Hay making is an important farm practice among livestock farmers. The main goal of conserving forage materials as hay is to ensure that adequate feed quality and quantity is available throughout the year. Though mechanized hay production is the most ideal, the low resource endowment of rural households remains a major challenge in Kenya. Scarcity of financial resources compounded by continued sub-division of family land holdings, has made it difficult for most households to engage in mechanized hay making. For this reason, therefore, there is need to promote the use of cost effective and sustainable haymaking strategies.
