Charles Sumner was a U.S. Representative born on January 6, 1811, in Boston, Massachusetts. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1852, Sumner supported abolition. After the Civil War, Sumner joined the Radical Republicans who believed the South should be punished. During his 20 year career,
Sumner most notably authored the nation’s first civil rights legislation in 1866. The anti-slavery advocate died on March 11, 1874, in Washington D.C.
