A robe is a desolation. But sometimes wear them to see the state of society, do not fall into clothes that appear different (clothing syuhroh).

From Ummu Salamah radhiyallahu 'anha, he said,

كان أحب الثياب إلى رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- القميص

"The most favored garment by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam is gamis." (Narrated by Tirmidhi 1762 and Abu Daud No. 4025. Al Hafiz Abu Thohir says that this hadeeth is hasan)

The above hadith mentioned by Imam Nawawi in Riyadhus Sholihin where the hadith indicates that the most favored garment by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam is the dress of the robe.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Sholeh Al 'Utsaimin rahimahullah said,

Because the robe here is more self-covering than the clothes that two pairs of izar (underwear) and rida '(top clothing). However the Companions of the time of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam sometimes wear such upper and lower garments. Sometimes they wear gamis. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam himself likes the robe for more cover. Because the dress is only one and wear it only once. Wearing the robe here is easier than using the bottom up clothing, where the worn is the first pair of trousers and then wear the upper garment.

But there is a note given by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Sholeh Al 'Utsaimin,

But if you are in a country (accustomed) to wearing superiors and underlings, wearing them is not a problem. The important thing is not to disguise the clothes of people in your country so as not to fall into the ban on wearing different clothes. Indeed, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam has banned the clothes of the shuhroh (clothes that are different). (See Syarh Riyadhis Sholihin, 4: 284-285, published by Madarul Wathon).
