The Diary of Samuel Pepys is a unique literary work. Unlike other diarists of his time, Pepys had no aspirations for publication. This liberated him to paint a frank, uncensored portrait of life in London, England at the time of the Restoration. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty played a key role in the early professionalization of the Royal Navy.
