Learn to speak Lifo, language of the Bafo (Bafaw) people from Cameroon

For some years now Bafaw people have felt that something should be done to save their language from extinction. The situation is so serious that even children whose two parents are all Bafaw and who grew up with their parents in a Bafaw town cannot speak their native language. Fortunately, there is a strong desire in most Bafaw to correct this situation: both children and grownups are highly interested in learning the Bafaw language, LIFO.

During the past few years sporadic efforts have been made to run Bafaw language classes aimed at teaching the learners to read and write the language. But, in the absence of organized arrangements to provide and support the instructors, the classes have not been sustainable.

Fortunately, Learn Lifo offers us an excellent possibility of saving the Bafaw Language from extinction. This system does not involve solely reading or writing. Of the over 7.000 languages in the world fewer than 500 have been reduced in the written form. Communication in the Bafaw and other languages is through speaking. A child who has not learnt to write or read gradually learns to communicate by acquiring the necessary skill through hearing what is spoken and practicing to speak. That is how those of us who speak Lifo acquired the skill. We read no primers; we merely reproduced sentences and expressions which we heard from those around us.
