Pheasants ( Phasianus ) are the nominative genus of the subfamily Phasianinae and the family Phasianidae a detachment of chorophenes.

The pheasants got their name on behalf of the town of Phasis. According to legend already the Argonauts brought them with them to Europe. In ancient times Phasis was the easternmost city in Ponte on the southern bank of the Fazis River founded by the inhabitants of Miletus for trade purposes as a fortified folding place and colony. On the site of the ancient Phasis is the present city of Poti.

Representatives of the genus live in herds in forests and shrubs and are distributed from the Fore and Central Asia in the west to China and Japan to the east. They are imported and acclimatized in a number of places in Europe and North America .
