Constitution du Cameroun

The Constitution of Cameroon was promulgated on January 18, 1996.

- With the liberalization of Cameroonian politics in the 1990s, pressure groups in the English-speaking regions demanded changes in the Cameroonian government, preferring a return to the federal system. Paul Biya responded to the pressure and, on January 18, 1996, promulgated Law No. 96/06 establishing a new Constitution in Cameroon. The main changes concerned article 14, which established the Senate as the upper house of the legislature, and article 6, which extended the term of office of the president to 7 years, and which placed the president of the Senate or the vice-president as successor to the presidents. The Constitution replaces the provinces with semi-autonomous regions. The Senate was created by decree 2013/056 of February 27, 2013.
