It is called Garuda Purana because it is in the form of a dialogue between Garuda the Divine King of Birds and Lord Vishnu.

This Purana deals specific issues of Hindu philosophy connected with death, funeral rites and reincarnation. According to this book, the concept of heaven and hell are not quite the same as what we imagine them to be in popular culture today. Garuda Purana in one of its many chapters defines the nature of punishment that is prescribed for sinners of the extreme kind that inhabit middle earth.

However, there are many deadly punishments for humans mentioned in this book. These punishments are so brutal, no living being would ever wish for such death. These punishments are known as ‘The Torments of Yama’, as per this book.
