Independence Day in India is celebrated on August 15 of each year. It celebrates the date in 1947 when the Indian Independence Act came into effect which established India as an independent country free from British colonial rule.

Independence Day is observed throughout India with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events. It is a national holiday.
