Augustusburg Palace, the summer residence of Cologne's Prince Elector and Archbishop Clemens August of Bavaria, is one of the most important Rococo treasures. Renowned European artists were involved in its construction between 1725 and 1768, such as Balthasar Neumann, who created the magnificent staircase. The rooms still shine in opulent splendour today. 

The French baroque garden is one of the most authentic gardens in Europe and a monument to garden art of international standing. 

A delightful walk away is the Falkenlust hunting lodge, one of Clemens August's favourite pleasure palaces.
