Enhanced Indonesian Spelling (EYD) Version 5

The rapid development of the Indonesian language is one result of the exposure of language users to scientific and cultural concepts in the new social order. This is a logical consequence of the liquidation of regional boundaries due to technological developments, especially information technology, which affects verbal communication that occurs between language users. Linguistic phenomena that arise as a result of increasingly intensive language contact require systematic handling in the form of more accommodative language rules. Through accommodative rules, language users can express their thoughts, ideas and feelings in a more orderly, good and directed manner.

Enhanced Indonesian Spelling—or better known by the acronym EYD—this fifth edition is an update of the previous spelling guidelines, namely the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI) stipulated by Decree of the Head of Agency No. 0321/I/BS.00.00/2021. In this EYD there are the addition of new rules and changes to old rules that are adapted to the development of the Indonesian language. These additions and changes signify the openness of the Indonesian language to development. To ensure easy access and broad reach, EYD V Edition is also published in the form of an application.

We hope that the publication of this EYD can answer the needs of language users for language guidelines that are up-to-date and accommodating. These guidelines are also expected to be the contribution of this institution in realizing orderly Indonesian language so that Indonesian can become a modern language that is authoritative and worthy of being the language of association among nations.
