Ballistic subs have a single strategic mission of carrying nuclear submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Attack submarines have several tactical missions, including sinking ships and subs, launching

cruise missiles, and gathering intelligence.

The submarine has a long history in the United States, beginning with the Turtle, the world's first submersible with a documented record of use in combat.

Submarines combine the qualities of stealth, endurance and flexibility to carry

out their tasks silently and unhindered from patrolling the world’s seas or carrying

the nation's strategic nuclear deterrent - the Trident missile.

A submarine (or simply sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater.

It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability. The term most

commonly refers to a large, crewed vessel. It is also sometimes used historically or colloquially

to refer to remotely operated vehicles and robots, as well as medium-sized or smaller vessels, s

uch as the midget submarine and the wet sub.
