Fana Idrettslag was founded 03.03.1920 at Stend with 11 stakeholders present and with the sports soccer and athletics on the program. The team's purpose was to work for the sports promotion in Fana and the first board consisted only of three members The annual meeting in 1921 gathered 23 members, while that year only nine met. The training opportunities were poor and characterized the interest in the early years. In the years 1922-1927, no separate boards for football and athletics were chosen.

In 1923, the business was moved to Nesttun because they applied for Bergen & Omegne Travselskap to borrow the new trotting track for training and activities. Most members now came from the Nesttun-Hop area, while the interest from the Stend area shrank. The sporting results were gratifying at the beginning of the 1920s, but the interest in teamwork failed with concern, tells the story. Towards the end of the twenties, however, the team interest awoke to life again with sporting success and good recruitment. In 1931, the team without premises to conduct indoor training and an application to the school board to use the gymnasium at Midtun school two days a week was rejected and the Youth Hall was occupied every day.

In 1934 a mark year for the sports team was completed when the cabin at Krækkjebærhaugen on Riple (nr. 59 b9 no.9) was completed. By the 15th anniversary in 1935, 300 members had been and was Hordaland's largest and two years later, the sports ground on the Nesttun Travbane was ready for use and the team arranged their first mustering competition the following year. In the war years 1940-45 the team was not dissolved, and the activity lay down and the cottage became, to prevent the Germans seizing it, shot over at Eivind Valestrand for Kr. 2000, - July 16, 1941. In August 1946 the cabin was returned to the team.

In June 1945, the Sports Club Drage was engaged in Fana Idrettslag and the following year Hop IL joined Fana Il as its own skate group. The same year, IL Bjarg was founded as a separate department at Stend as a result of a long training path to the activities at Nesttun, but already this year, this agreement was dissolved and IL Bjarg became his own sports team in 1947

At the 30th anniversary in 1950, NM was organized as a jubilee event and in 1951 the company made its own office in the wardrobe at Nesttun Travbane. In 1952 it was built jump booth in Lilletvedtbakken and in 1957 the team got its first business manager in Alfred Josefsen.

After the tense beginnings of football and athletics on the program, the team has constantly evolved and expanded and currently includes eight groups in addition to the team is alliance with Fana Football.
