Quimbanda or "Kimbanda" is a religious concept of Afro-Brazilian origin, a line of work different from Umbanda and Candomblé that is still controversial as to its actual definition today. It is sometimes classified as an autonomous religion. The difference in writing does not differ in the works of religion, which confuses some people who believe there are differences, Quimbanda with "Q" was only adapted because there was no letter "K" in the Portuguese alphabet when the religion was implemented in Brazil

It is identified by some as the left side (negative pole) of Umbanda, that is, who has all knowledge of the astral world, including black magic, and who can help to do good. Its entities vibrate in the woods, cemeteries and crossroads, also known as "Povo da Rua" and include the Exu messengers or guardians of umbandas and Pombagiras.

The word "Quimbanda" (Kimbanda) comes from the African word in Bantu which means "healer" or "shaman (shaman)", it also refers to "One who communicates with the beyond".

Quimbanda works more directly with exus and pomba giras, also called street people, in a way that is not worked in pure Umbanda. These entities, according to Umbanda cosmology, manipulate negative forces, which does not mean that they are evil. They are usually present in places where there may be kiumbas, obsessors, also known as backward spirits. Exus and Pombagiras work basically for the spiritual development of people, with the aim of spiritual evolution, in addition to the protection of their medium. As they are the entities closest to the vibrational range of the incarnates, they have many similarities with humans.

The delivery of offerings is common in Quimbanda, as well as in Umbanda, but they vary according to each entity. Alcoholic beverages can be offered, such as cachaça (marafo), whiskey or cognac, among others, in addition to candles and cigars.

Lourenço Braga, disciple of Zélio de Moraes, wrote in 1942 the book Umbanda (white magic) and Quimbanda (black magic), where he lists seven lines from Quimbanda:

Soul Line - Exu Omulu

Skull Line - Exu Caveira

Nagô Line - Exu Gererê

Malei Line - Exu Rei

Mossuribu Line - Exu Kaminaloá

Cabimblos Quimbandeiros Line - Exu Pantera Preta

Mixed Line - Exu dos Rios / Exu das Campinas
