The core concepts behind hockey had been around for years, but modern hockey was formed in the late 1800s in Montreal, Canada. Ice hockey was developed in Canada, particularly in Montreal, which hosted the first ice hockey games played in an indoor arena on March 3, 1875. Some features from this game, such as the ice-rink length and use of the disc, are retained today. Other rules were modified from English rules to suit ice hockey since hockey is different logistically (played on a closed ice rink rather than on an open field). It is clear, then, that games similar to ice hockey were played in Canada during the 19th century, probably brought to Canada by colonists or military men from the British Isles. After a period of historical confusion, scholars now believe that ice hockey was invented in Canada, at Windsor, Nova Scotia, with boys at Kings College School playing an early game on an icy pond.

During Europe's cold, brutal winters, it was not unusual to see the youngest athletes playing the version of hockey on ice. Professional ice hockey as we now know it developed about 1904, with the creation of the International Professional Hockey League, based out of Houghton, Michigan, and its inaugural team, the Portage Lakers. The first genuinely competitive ice hockey game was played on January 26-27, 1883, as the inaugural edition of the hockey-playing tournament, the Winter Carnival of Montreal, featured three teams.

The rules for ice hockey were not published in The Montreal Gazette until 1877. In the mid-19th century, organized leagues formed in Canada, and ice hockey rules evolved -- including the net size and number of players on the ice at one time (six for each team, with a goaltender). This first organized indoor game was played in the Victoria Skating Rink between two teams of nine players, including James Creighton, a Canadian, and a few other students from McGill University.
