"O Canada! Was proclaimed a national anthem on July 1, 1980, a century after being first sung in 1880. The music is the work of Calixa Lavallée, a famous composer, and the French lyrics are by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier.

As the popularity of the song has grown over the years, several English versions have been written. The official English version is based on the one written in 1908 by Judge Robert Stanley Weir. The French version has remained the same since 1880.
