Bison, also commonly known as buffalo, are large, strong plains animals in the same family as cattle. These wild mammals are found primarily in the Great Plains region of North America and for this reason are often referred to as American bison. Bison are herd animals and travel together searching for fertile grazing lands. Despite their large size and strength, bison are herbivores and satisfy their dietary requirements through eating a combination of grass and shrubbery. With limited natural predators due to their large size, the bison’s greatest threat has been hunting by humans. After the Civil War, overhunting nearly wiped out the bison population in the United States, though successful efforts have since been made to rebuild their population.
