The history of Gujarat began with Stone Age settlements followed by Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlements like Indus Valley Civilisation.[1] Gujarat's coastal cities, chiefly Bharuch, served as ports and trading centers in the Nanda, Maurya, Satavahana and Gupta empires as well as Western Kshatrapas period. After the fall of the Gupta empire in the 6th century, Gujarat flourished as an independent Hindu/Buddhist state. The Maitraka dynasty, descended from a Gupta general, ruled from the 6th to the 8th centuries from their capital at Vallabhi, although they were ruled briefly by Harsha during the 7th century. The Arab rulers of Sindh sacked Vallabhi in 770, bringing the Maitraka dynasty to an end. The Gurjara-Pratihara Empire ruled Gujarat after from the 8th to 10th centuries. As well as, for some periods the region came under the control of Rashtrakuta Empire and Pala Empire. In 775 the first Parsi (Zoroastrian) refugees arrived in Gujarat from Greater Iran.[2]

During the 10th century, the native Chaulukya dynasty came to power. From 1297 to 1300, Alauddin Khalji, the Turkic Sultan of Delhi, destroyed Anhilwara and incorporated Gujarat into the Delhi Sultanate. After Timur's sacking of Delhi at the end of the 14th century weakened the Sultanate, Gujarat's governor Zafar Khan Muzaffar asserted his independence, and his son, Sultan Ahmad Shah I (ruled 1411 to 1442), restructured Ahmedabad as the capital. The Sultanate of Gujarat remained independent until 1576, when the Mughal emperor Akbar conquered it and annexed it to the Mughal Empire as a province. Surat had become the prominent and main port of India during Mughal rule.

ગુજરાત (ઉચ્ચારણ) (English: Gujarat) ભારત દેશનું ઔદ્યોગીકૃત રાજ્ય છે.[૨][૩][૪][૫] ભારતના પશ્ચિમ છેડે આવેલું ગુજરાત પશ્ચિમે અરબી સમુદ્ર, ઉત્તરમાં સિંધ (પાકિસ્તાન), ઉત્તર અને ઉત્તરપૂર્વે રાજસ્થાન, પૂર્વે મધ્ય પ્રદેશ અને દક્ષિણે મહારાષ્ટ્ર રાજ્ય તથા દમણ અને દીવ અને દાદરા અને નગર હવેલીના કેન્દ્રશાસિત પ્રદેશોથી ઘેરાયેલું છે. ગુજરાતનું પાટનગર ગાંધીનગર છે, જયારે તેનું સૌથી મોટું શહેર અમદાવાદ છે. અમદાવાદ ગુજરાતનું એકમાત્ર મેટ્રોપોલિટન શહેર છે.[૬] ગુજરાત રાજ્યનું નામ ગુજ્જર પરથી પડેલ છે. જેમણે ઇ.સ. ૭૦૦ અને ઇ.સ. ૮૦૦ દરમિયાન અહીં રાજ કર્યું હતું.

ગુજરાત રાજ્યની સ્થાપના મે ૧, ૧૯૬૦ના રોજ બૃહદ મુંબઇ રાજ્યમાંથી જ્યાં ગુજરાતી બોલાતી હોય તેવા વિસ્તારો અલગ પાડીને કરવામાં આવી હતી. આ રાજ્ય સિંધુ ખીણ સંસ્કૃતિના પુરાતન અવશેષની પ્રમુખ જગ્યાઓ ધરાવે છે, જેમ કે લોથલ અને ધોળાવીરા. લોથલ દુનિયાનું સૌ પ્રથમ બંદર હતું એવું માનવામાં આવે છે.

ગુજરાતે ભારતને તેની સ્વાતંત્ર્ય ચળવળના બે મોટા નેતાઓની ભેટ આપેલ છે - મહાત્મા ગાંધી અને સરદાર વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલ.[૭] ગુજરાતે વિશ્વના બે દેશોને રાષ્ટ્રપિતા આપ્યા છે - ભારતને મહાત્મા ગાંધી અને પાકિસ્તાનને મહમદ અલી ઝીણા. આ ઉપરાંત ગુજરાતે ભારતને મોરારજી દેસાઈ જેવા સિદ્ધાંતવાદી અને રાષ્ટ્રપ્રેમી વડાપ્રધાન પણ આપ્યા છે.[૮] સરદાર વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલ ભારતના પ્રથમ ગૃહમંત્રી અને ઉપમુખ્યમંત્રી હતા કે જેમણે ૬૦૦ કરતાંં પણ વધારે રજવાડાંંઓને એકઠા કરીને બૃહદ ભારતની રચના કરી હતી.[૯]

સમગ્ર ભારતના ઇતિહાસમાં ગુજરાતે ભારતના આર્થિક વિકાસમાં ખૂબ અગત્યનો ભાગ ભજવ્યો છે.[૧૦] ગુજરાત ભારતના વિકસિત રાજ્યોમાંનું એક છે અને તેનો ઔદ્યોગિક વિકાસ દર સમગ્ર ભારતમાં સૌથી વધારે છે અને ભારતના સરેરાશ વિકાસદર કરતાંં પણ ઘણો વધારે છે.
