However, this definition varies depending on the jurisdiction; in Ontario, Canada, paralegals are independent legal practitioners, licensed by the Law Society of Ontario to provide legal services to members of the public. Licensed paralegals in Ontario may manage their own legal firm. They are employed as municipal and provincial prosecutors and may be appointed as justices of the peace.

A paralegal is a person trained in legal matters who performs tasks requiring knowledge of the law and legal procedures.
