ચાણક્ય અથવા કૌટિલ્ય (ઇ.સ.પૂર્વે ૩૫૦-૨૮૩) મૌર્ય વંશના પ્રથમ સમ્રાટ ચંદ્રગુપ્ત મૌર્યના ગુરુ અને મુખ્યપ્રધાન હતા. ચાણક્ય ચંદ્રગુપ્તને રાજા બનવામા મદદરૂપ બન્યો હતો. તેમનું સાચુ નામ વિષ્ણુગુપ્ત હતું. તેઓ ચણક ના પુત્ર હોવાથી તેમને ચાણક્ય કહેવામાં આવે છે; તથા કુટિલ નીતિના ઉપદેશક હોવાથી તેમને ભગવાન કૌટિલ્ય પણ કહે છે. તેમણે રાજકીય ગ્રંથ અર્થશાસ્ત્રની રચના કરી છે જે રાજ્ય કેમ ચલાવવું તેની વિગતો આપે છે અને આજે પણ સંદર્ભ ગ્રંથ તરીકે ઉપયોગમાં લેવાય છે.

Chanakya was an Indian teacher, philosopher and royal advisor. He managed the first Maurya emperor Chandragupta’s rise to power at a young age. Chanakya also developed Neeti-Sutras (aphorisms—pithy sentences) that tell people how they should behave. of these well-known 455 sutras, about 216 refer to rajaneeti (the do,s and don’ts of running a kingdom). Apparently, Chanakya used these sutras to groom Chandragupta and other selected disciples in the art of ruling a kingdom.
