Sound measurements for physics lessons. Free and ad-free.
This free, ad-free, and privacy-compliant sound analysis app was designed specifically for science education. A detailed operating manual, many experiment instructions for acoustics and mechanics experiments and a version for older devices (version 2.2) can be found at www.spaichinger-schallLevelmesser.de. If you have any problems, please contact me by email ([email protected]). Unfortunately, the new version 3.2 can only be made available for Android 8.0 and newer. Previous Android versions receive an older version of the Spaichinger sound analyzer via the App Store.
This freeware app has 9 windows that can be displayed as single or double windows:
o Storage oscilloscope: curve of the sound pressure as a function of time
o Frequency spectrum (FFT)
o Fundamental frequency of a sound (in Hz) and indication of the associated musical note
o Double tone generator for simultaneous generation of up to two different tones with phase shift (e.g. for beats)
o Pulse generator to generate “cracking noises” (e.g. for the speed of sound)
o Noise lights
o Effective sound pressure (in Pa) and sound intensity under normal conditions
o Sound pressure level (in dB)
o A-weighted sound pressure level (in dB(A))
In addition, sound studies can be carried out using the included wave recordings of musical instruments. In this collection of musical instruments you will also find the wonderful overtone singing by Mr. Wolfgang Saus.
The measurements can be saved, opened and sent as a wave file (via Bluetooth, email, ...). Playback is also possible, i.e. the sound recording can be listened to again while the wave file is playing, with all values being displayed at the same time as during the recording.
It is also possible to send the values as a CSV file.
When analyzing musical instruments or the tuning of musical instruments, the fundamental frequency of a sound determined by the app with great precision (deviation: max. 0.2 Hz) is helpful. In addition to the fundamental frequency, the musical note and the frequency of the note that is close to the fundamental frequency are displayed. This makes it possible to tune musical instruments (especially guitars) easily and precisely.
The diagrams can be zoomed as desired.
With the "Advanced measurement quickly" option, recordings can be made with a maximum length of 60 seconds, which can be analyzed manually in detail after recording.
The sound level values (including effective sound pressure and sound intensity) are not particularly accurate because the built-in microphones do not have a constant frequency response and do not have an omnidirectional characteristic. The sound level values can be calibrated (single-point calibration), but this does not change the quality of the built-in microphones. To obtain more accurate results, an external measurement microphone should be used. The sound level values are still helpful for physics lessons, as they can give a feeling for the magnitude and the logarithmic relationship between sound pressure and sound level or sound intensity and sound level (under normal conditions) can be worked out in class. Experimental instructions can be found at www.spaichinger-schallLevelmesser.de.
Please: I would be pleased if you could contact me by email ([email protected]) if you have any problems. This way we could resolve the problems quickly and accurately.
