Sports autos started to appear in the late 40's with the introduction of 'sporting' road vehicles from now famous manufacturers. In those days, the ethos of the sports vehicle was a one designed not only for the road but for motorsport competition as well.

It was Ford who changed the concept of sports autos with, what many people believe to be the first supercar, the GT40, in 1965.
