Thomas Isidore Noel Sankara, (born December 21, 1949, Nkroful, Yako, Upper Volta [now Burkina Faso] was a Burkinabe Military Officer and socialist revolutionary who served as the President of Burkina Faso after a military coup and held that position until his deposition and killing in (October 15, 1987) Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. A Marxist-Leninist and Pan-Africanist, aged 33, Sankara became the President of the Republic of Upper Volta. He renamed the country from the French colonial name Upper Volta to Burkina Faso ("Land of Incorruptible People"), with its people being called Burkinabe ("Upright people").
