The origins of kirigami art go back to China, where the art of jiezhi was practiced. The jiezhi includes all the techniques of folding and cutting paper. Subsequently, the jiezhi spread throughout the world to undergo several changes. From this art, origami, kumigami, chigiri, kirie, kirigami, etc. appeared in Japan.

Since kirigami art did not have a great influence in the world outside of Japan, there are not many documents on this art of paper handling. It is known, however, that the oldest use of kirigami was in religious ceremonies and temples, mainly Shinto. Subsequently, there was no real evolution, the kirigami has always kept its traditional values ​​while following the progress of its closest relationship, origami.

Today, the most popular sign for the kirigami is a square bolt hanging in several Japanese temples.

Its modern popularity is due to its flexibility. The kirigami can be found in simple, more complex or even three-dimensional forms.

The kirigami is widespread worldwide, although it does not have as much recognition as origami:

In cards (we open them and an image unfolds);

In childish handicrafts (eg snowflakes);

In abstract arts of paper cut and folded;

In printing arts;

In some museums (especially in Japan).
