Indonesian Wayang Figures

Wayang is the art of indigenous performances from Indonesia that thrive in Java and Bali. The show is also popular in some areas such as Sumatra and Malay. Some wayang culture is influenced by Javanese and Hindu culture.

UNESCO, the cultural institution of the United Nations, on November 7, 2003 established the wayang as the famous puppet show of Indonesia, a priceless world masterpiece of the Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Actually, puppet shows not only exist in Indonesia because many other countries that have puppet shows. But the puppet shadow show (Wayang) in Indonesia has its own style of speech and uniqueness, which is the original masterpiece of Indonesia. For this reason UNESCO incorporated it into the List of Intellectual Cultural Heritage Representative in 2003.

There is no evidence to suggest that wayang existed before Hinduism spread in South Asia. It is estimated that performing arts are brought in by Indian traders. However, local genius and culture that existed prior to the entry of Hinduism together with the development of the performing arts that entered gave its own color to the performing arts in Indonesia.

When Hinduism enters Indonesia and adapts to existing cultures, the performing arts become an effective medium for spreading Hinduism. The puppet show uses the Ramayana and Mahabharata stories.

"Wali Songo" in Java, has divided the wayang into three. Wayang Kulit in the east, wayang wong in central java and wayang golek in west java. Is Raden Patah and Sunan Kali Jaga a great meritorious. Similarly, when the entry of Islam, when the show that displays "God" or "Gods" in the form of humans is prohibited, puppet puppets made of cowhide, where the only time the show is watched only shadows.
