Who were the Knights Templar?

Also known as the Order of Solomon's Temple, the Knights Templar were a Catholic military order founded in 1119 AD and active until about 1312. Their original stated purpose was to protect Christian travelers from danger while on pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Levant. Their warriors were also amongst the most highly-skilled fighting units of the Crusades. Rumors of secret initiation ceremonies and heretical practices, as well as envy over their vast financial empire, eventually helped to bring about their downfall and dissolution. Some researchers theorize that the surviving members of the Knights Templar eventually gave rise to modern Freemasonry.
