Drum and bass is a genre of English electronic music also known originally as Hardcore or Jungle. The "first or its kind genre" emerged in England in the early 1990s. The genre is characterized by fast breakbeats typically between 150–180 beats per minute. with heavy bass and sub-bass lines. The "bass line" is usually created with sampled sources or synthesizers.

Drum and bass sub-genres include drumstep, breakcore, ragga jungle, hardcore, darkstep, ambient drum and bass, and more importantly liquid funk and Intelligent drum and bass. Despite its roots in the UK, the style has more recently established itself around the world. Drum and bass has influenced many other genres like hip hop, dub-step, house music, trip hop and ambient music. Drum and bass is dominated by a small group of "hardcore" record labels
