Prophet Zarathustra's blessing of King Vishtaspa from the Zoroastrian Avesta.
This app contains a rare Yasht or hymn from the ancient Khordeh Avesta, a collection of Zoroastrian sacred texts. The hymn consists of a blessing recited by Prophet Zoroaster or Zarathustra (Zartusht) to Shah Vishtaspa, who became his devoted patron and follower. The numerous, almost poetic, expressions of blessing in the hymn encompass all aspects of life and the afterlife. Many key figures from Persian mythology are also mentioned. Translated into English from the original Avestan and Pahlavi versions.
What is Zoroastrianism?
Zoroastrianism, or Mazdayasna, is one of the world's oldest religions. Founded by Prophet Zoroaster or Zarathustra in ancient Persia, it is a monotheistic religion which worships Ahura Mazda (Wise Lord) as God or Supreme Being. Zoroaster also conceived of a contesting force called Angra Mainyu - destructive or angry spirit, akin to "malignant mentality". In later times, this concept was falsely personified into a Devil figure called Ahriman.
In Zoroastrianism, the purpose of life is to "be among those who renew the world... to make the world progress towards perfection". The religion's basic tenets include Humata, Hukhta, and Huvarshta, which mean: Good Thoughts, Good Words, and Good Deeds.
Over time, Zoroastrianism influenced many other religious systems, including Second Temple Judaism, Gnosticism, Christianity, and Islam. In modern times, small Zoroastrian communities may still be found throughout the world, with larger numbers residing in India and the United States.
