Mahabharata Authored Vyasa - English Translation

The Mahabharata, composed by Vyasa, is one of the two epic Hindu poems (the other being the Ramayana). It's an ancient Indian text that explores various themes, including:

Storyline:

The Mahabharata revolves around the Pandavas (five brothers: Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva) and their struggle for justice against their cousins, the Kauravas (Duryodhana and his 99 brothers). The conflict begins with a game of dice, leading to the Pandavas' exile and ultimately, the great war of Kurukshetra.

Structure:

The Mahabharata consists of 18 parvas (books), with approximately 100,000 shlokas (verses).

Parva - 1:

Adi Parva

(The Book of the Beginning)

The origins of the Mahabharata's narration, detailing the birth and early life of the Kuru princes, the rise of the Pandavas, and their noble deeds amidst emerging conspiracies.

Parva - 2:

Sabha Parva

(The Book of the Assembly Hall)

Describes Yudhisthira's palace at Indraprastha, his Rajasuya sacrifice, and the deceptive humiliation of the Pandavas, marking the start of a conflict that tests their resilience.

Parva - 3:

Vana Parva

(The Book of the Forest)

The Pandavas endure their twelve-year forest exile, gaining wisdom and resolve through divine encounters, preparing for the challenges ahead.

Virata Parva

(The Book of Virata)

Living incognito, the Pandavas secure King Virata’s kingdom, with Arjuna’s valor showcased in his single-handed defeat of the Kuru army.

Parva - 5:

Udyoga Parva

(The Book of the Effort)

Attempts at peace between the Pandavas and Kauravas fail despite Krishna’s mediation, forcing both sides to prepare for the impending war.

Parva - 6:

Bhishma Parva

(The Book of Bhishma)

Covers the war’s beginning, Bhishma’s leadership of the Kauravas, and Krishna’s teachings to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, ending with Bhishma’s fall.

Parva - 7:

Drona Parva

(The Book of Drona)

Drona leads the Kaurava forces, with many warriors on both sides perishing. Drona’s death shifts the war’s course.

Parva - 8:

Karna Parva

(The Book of Karna)

Karna’s fierce leadership intensifies the battles, bringing the war closer to its climax, marked by his valiant efforts and eventual defeat.

Shalya Parva

(The Book of Shalya)

Shalya leads the final battle, which ends with Duryodhana’s fall to Bhima, symbolizing the ultimate triumph of the Pandavas.

Sauptika Parva

A night attack by Ashwatthama leaves the Pandava army devastated, with only a few survivors on each side.

Stri Parva

Grief-stricken, Gandhari and other women mourn the war’s toll, with Gandhari cursing Krishna for the destruction.
